Artist's Comments

The day after Sept. 11, with every store sold out of American Flags, my daughters, then ages 10 and 9, made an American Flag out of a Mountain Dew box and put post-it notes in our front window.
They were too young and scared of what happened in NYC, DC and Pennsylvania too truly grasp that tragedy. But in their total innocence, they felt compelled to display some sort of patriotic honor to those who were killed.
This picture has more meaning that they will ever know.

Unfortunately sometimes we forget what happens September 11...this photo is full of meanings, but the best of all is "do NOT forget"!!!

It was terrifying.
The moments between 8am and 11 am, it felt like the world was going to end. Nothing known for sure about what and why it was happening.
I was actually watching live TV when the 2nd plane hit the WTC.
It is an image/memory/feeling that will forever flash in my head.

It's things like that that give an antidote to my boundless cynicism. Your children may not have understood the 9-11 attacks totally, as you said...but they knew the suicide attacks were somehow wrong & they felt like they had to do something. What your kids did was symbolic--but sometimes, the right symbols can make all the difference in the actions people take. Please give your daughters hugs for me.

In the final analysis, your will is your only ally.

Consider them hugged
Thanks for reading about that picture. It was a terrible shot, heck, I didn't even get the whole saying in the picture....but what I didn't miss was how they were feeling. When they grow up, they won't really remember the details or the total horror, like we as adults will, but they will remember the terrfying feelings they had. That is something that no one can comfort. This picture shows how they felt they could deal with, and support our country.

The curves of your lips rewrite history

You never read it?
This picture, although not well taken, has more meaning than any of my "good" pics.
it was the emotion I felt when you and Kayla were so confused, yet you felt you had to show something to respect what you saw.
